Many traditions indicate an “energy centre”, the third eye, as the door between soul and personality, higher and lower consciousness, internal and external worlds. During evolution, when activated by a disciple of Wisdom, it is the place to acquire freedom from the lower self for the domain of the higher Self.
To dominate the third eye is very difficult. Humans are concentrated in their magnetic field which holds them prisoners. They live within their personal consciousness, which tends only toward forms and concrete things. To become free they devise a series of psychic maneuvers, variable and partially unconscious, which gradually condition them to detachment and from which they learn deep truths. These are preliminary features.
During this time, they learn that forms have a divine and spiritual nature, do not threaten their freedom and are symbols, namely writing, of the universal language that expresses the One.
So they stop fighting forms and start disengaging from the lower self and its selfish vibrations. When this second phase is about to end, disciples know they are close to the threshold of the subtler/inner world. They are no longer inexperienced novices and not yet masters. They feel that the freedom of the Infinite is at hand, and that the last move is up to them, and to them alone…
In other words, to better illustrate this development, the third eye is definable as that psychic centre where lower and higher self, in mutual and mutable relationship, keep a contact with the Whole. It is the place of divine proportion. In that centre disciples pass from lower to higher life, leaving down what is low, discarding ballast and letting themselves be transferred up, into the “Promised Land.” They leave the world of prohibitions, laws, decrees and penalties to rise up to those subtle regions where there is one only rule: harmony in freedom.
