Harmonics

1709, from harmonic, 1560s, “relating to music”, and -ics, “matters relevant to” what is harmonic; earlier (c.1500) armonical “tuneful, harmonious,” from Latin harmonicus, from Greek harmonikos “harmonic, musical, skilled in music,” from harmonia, “agreement, concord of sounds,” also as a proper name, the personification of music, literally “means of joining,” used of ship-planks, etc., also “settled government, order,” related to harmos “fastenings of a door; shoulder,” from Proto-Indo-European *ar-ti-, from *ar- “to fit together” (arm). From Indo-European root *AR-/*OR-/*UR-, indicating movement to connect. Synthetic idea of “moving”, “working”, “attaching”: motion to join. It is such an important root to give name to the Indo-European people or “Aryan.” Origin, Horizon, Art, Order have the same root.
