“A spark of higher energy has been given to each man, and as its bearer he is invested with a lofty duty. He is a bridge to the Higher Worlds.” (Agni Yoga Series, Aum, 67)
The task of restoring the world to harmony and order* is a stupendous one. Yet before we can consider humanity’s Task — destined to such a responsible cosmo-planetary mission, it helps to understand the triple energetic impulse, borne on the impetus of the seven great creative builders, breaths or rays, which started the world process of Becoming.
We know that “Life is the synthesis of all activity — an activity which is a blend of many energies, for life is the sum total of the energies of the seven solar systems, of which our solar system is but one … This seven-fold cosmic energy, the fused and blended energies of seven solar systems, including ours, sweeps automatically through each of the seven, carrying the qualities of
1. Impulse towards activity.
2. Active impulse towards organisation.
3. Active organised impulse towards a definite purpose. [1]
With regards to the three streams of force or energetic impulses, I will briefly mention (without getting too redundant) that we can speak of them as: Life, quality and appearance, or spirit, soul and body. They constitute existence itself, and we understand creation through the divine triplicity of Will, Love, and Mind, with its capacity for growth, for activity, for manifestation of beauty, and for full conformity to the Plan.
Yet, it is important to bear in mind that “these three are as much a unity as is a human being who conceives an idea, uses his mind and brain to bring his idea into manifestation, and employs his hands and all his natural forces to perfect his concept. The division of aspects and forces is unreal, except for the purpose of intelligent understanding.” [2]
The energies into which the three distribute themselves, thus becoming seven, in their turn produce the forty-nine types of force which express themselves through all the forms in the three worlds and the four kingdoms in nature.
You have therefore:
a. Three monadic groups of energies. The essential Unity expresses, through these three, the qualities of Will, Love and Intelligence.
b. Seven groups of energies which are the medium through which the three major groups express the divine qualities.
c. Forty-nine groups of forces to which all forms respond and which constitute the body of expression for the seven, who in their turn are reflections of the three divine qualities. (ibid, pg. 7)
The significance of humanity is to transmute this energy into comprehension through consciousness and propelling it by way of Hierarchy into the higher spheres. Such a registering and differentiation of the energies and forces by the human mind is meant as a formulation of theory, a distinguishing of truth, an apprehension of Deity. Here, one finds self-recognition, a growth in responsiveness, which is potent enough to enable human to differentiate reaction to the interplay, to spirit-matter, to the dual nature of existence. “It is in the realm of so-called mind that the great principle of separateness is found. It is also in the realm of mind that the great at-one-ment is made.” [3] In some mysterious ways, therefore, the differentiations which manifest in nature are found in the realm of quality and not in the realm of reality.
The essential Unity, or Harmony, of the three, seven, and forty-nine, is therefore realized through the fourth Kingdom or Humanity. Humanity in essence is the Fourth creative Hierarchy, the Initiate between Heaven and Earth. In other words, human consciousness, the fourth kingdom of nature, has the great planetary task of managing harmony between all the creatures of the globe, and between this and Heaven. Humanity is the linking bridge, between the unseen and seen aspects, portraying the consciousness of spirit and matter, and its eventual unity.
I keep referring back to the quality of unity and harmony — for the urge towards evolution, towards an evolution which is active, organized, and which works undeviatingly and unerringly towards a specific goal, expresses itself through humanity, which in synthetic terms produces necessarily understanding, promotes goodwill, and eventually ends the separative, isolating tendencies of mankind. Humanity itself is the key to all evolutionary processes and to all correct understanding of the divine Plan.
Thus, the very condition of the human as an Entity uniting in himself the lower and higher constituents of the Universe is unique (4th kingdom). “By his very nature, the human emerges as the intermediary between the material and divine worlds, combining in himself the material and earthly, and divine and spiritual, natures, inherently containing within himself comprehension, that is, intellect and the capacity of Creative Thought… a Thought possessing within itself the potent energy and relative influence on the process of development of the entire planet.” [4]
“Humanity truly represents, as it were, the cement of the planet; it helps to hold together the parts threatened by chaos. An unpopulated world easily disintegrates. But man must not pride himself on this mission, he must feel himself to be a guard on watch. Verily, only he who is fortified by the armor of Agni can the more fully consummate his destiny. Agni must not be in a state of inaction. The element of fire is the most active, most speedy, and most spatial, and it is manifested in the midst of the tension of thought. Does not man preserve the planet by thought? The most precious substances are created by thought. Compare breadth of thought with insipidity. I attest that people can gather a treasure of thought, which, in rhythm with the Cosmos, will create the New Era.” (Fiery World I, 514)
Returning to the present Human Task — that is, Group consciousness — is a real Entity that coordinates and unites hearts according to Magic or the “Rule of supermundane Liberty”: it is Harmony and Hierarchy in Action. It is the radiance of the new human Order. Human, which can be estimated as the imperfect incarnation of the Four (Imitation of the Hierarchy and Order), has for centuries lost the vital and organic contact with the Seven (Restoration of the Plan) and is suspended and without vision, unaware of the Rule of Art — all that is beautiful, true and good, ordered or hierarchical, harmonic or well-proportioned to the Center, to the Canon of the Common Good. Now, however, the rising energy of the Seven seeps from the east and colors heaven with the new Order.
Out of the present chaos, we carry the task of restoring the golden thread of unification and synthesis. The time has come when the separate parts must be united and the whole can stand together again. Divine Will, divine Love, and divine Mind find their reflection in the world of human beings. Within human hearts and life, they also find their place. Truly, humanity is the tie between the worlds. We must harbor the renewal and respectful will for order in our hearts, united with the harmonizing force of the Four imitating the higher Model, and welcome the re-establishment of the cultural and civil cohesion of humanity. It is new, and “shining with the regular correctness of its form of infinite content”. It irradiates and attracts.
* This article is aligned with the today direction Sun-Earth-Mercury: the Sun – “the great magnet”, Earth – “She who is thirsty for Heaven” and Mercury (4th Ray), the “Lord of Wisdom” and Harmony through conflict.
The systemic space is traversed by a luminous lightning which flows into the Center, feeding it, that solar spiritual Center where the most sacred Mystery dwells and from which a source of inexhaustible Beauty radiates.
The heavenly Messenger reveals the solar Model to the Earth, ardent and harmonious, so that It can consciously replicate its order, allowing the germination of a New Culture.
