The Philosophy of Love

Philosophy and Love share a common foundation; the impetus towards the absolute, and towards its multiple formal reverberations, that characterises philosophical speculation is interwoven with the magnetic love that the absolute exerts on the minds and hearts of men eager to learn the Art of Living, the supreme ‘philosophy’.
Philosophy, as Plato teaches, is that ‘erotic’ momentum (since under the aegis of Eros) that lifts one from earthly love for material forms (and the pleasures that come with them) to perfect love (and the bliss that follows) for the supreme model, the One/Infinite, the source and purpose of all Wisdom, the source and purpose of all Beauty.
Reason leads to wisdom, in other words, to the heart. But a worm cavils away, even though it crawls with difficulty across people’s paths. So let us be persistent when it comes to attainments of the heart. In it lies a precious coffer of ecstasy that gold cannot buy.” (1)
One can perceive worlds through the heart, but not through the intellect. So wisdom is contrary to the intellect, but there is no ban on adorning the intellect with wisdom.” (2)

The philosophy of Love carves pulsating paths in the consciousness of Humanity, and this very year 2025, in which the Hierarchy observes human hearts while on Earth the thirst for power and the yearning for brotherhood confront each other, emerges as a watershed between what we might call the ‘old world’, built and regulated by obsolete and crystallised infrastructures and modes of operation, as well as of consciousness, and a ‘nascent’ world that is slowly coagulating around a radical change in human consciousness, striving with ever-increasing momentum for Cooperation and Union.
And pursuing Oneness seems to be the keystone capable of leading Humanity towards the recognition of the unitary essence that vibrates in every human being ‘in the image and likeness of God’; a process that is realised through the synthesis of opposites, that synthesis that the magnetism of Love wisely makes triumph in every recess of the solar System.
The Magnet, by attracting similar charges together, produces new and subtle energies: currents composed of a prevailing quality, a synthesis of many qualities; these products, in turn, are combined with others, ad infinitum, in a spiralling succession of ever more comprehensive and powerful constructions. But at the same time, the Magnet, in order to build, breaks down exhausted and outdated formulations, releasing their components, which it reuses in new, superior productions. Among the many entities generated in this way, one stands out for its ambiguous but central nature: the human, in which material and spiritual elements coexist in clear and evident contrast.” (3)

In treading the arduous path of synthesis, man first regards Love as synonymous with possession, pretending in a loud voice to get back what he presumes to give, but later, educated by the many experiences on the chain of incarnations, he understands the ‘impersonal’ nature of Love and is prepared to become a living magnet himself.
He who loves in an impersonal way … generates a magnetic, bipolar field, but remains superior and indifferent; he who loves in order to be loved back, that is, in a personal way, is part of the field he creates, and remains trapped in it. … Consider that human beings usually do not love without asking for a response, and this locks them into the magnetism that attracts and repels: they ‘descend into the field’ and remain enchanted by it. One infers from this that impersonal love frees one from formal deception, and there is no other way, for there is nothing but love. Living in the enchanted castle is possible (it belongs to everyone) and implies magnetic exchanges, i.e. a giving and receiving. These rarely even out perfectly, and so scores to settle remain. They are debts of various kinds, but they have a common origin: personal love for the world, things, creatures, and some are slight, others serious. This is how the layers of karma are formed, the justice of which cannot be escaped. (…) Love, however, little by little (yet suddenly) becomes impersonal and the spell gradually (yet immediately) dissolves, and it’s like it never was. (4)

And it is precisely in the light of this wisdom of Love (or philosophy of living) that today we celebrate the Gemini Full Moon, the third (5) of the main ‘energetic flashes’ of this first half of the solar cycle, a flash that sees in the flame of the 2nd Ray, conveyed by Gemini (and put into action by Venus, esoteric Ruler of the Sign and mother of Eros), the instrument through which all dross of separateness is burnt in the crucible of Love, a true ‘liberating’ and unifying force.
The Ray of Love-Wisdom is the quality of basic motive that utilises the intelligent organisation of matter in motion to demonstrate in one synthetic whole the great Love aspect of the Logos.” (6)

And Love has multiple declinations that resonate in its spatial chords: love between Spirit and Matter, love as a universal motive (‘the Love that moves the sun and the other stars’), love as magnetic energy and Law of Attraction, love as a yearning for lost oneness, love as a will towards the Common Good, love as an inevitable attraction between all entities that populate the cosmos…

“… stars, planets, Intelligences of all levels love each other two by two, according to the great law of the Magnet, and we must explore the mystery of this eternal hierarchical spousal, the reflections of which can be seen in the social order of all peoples, but also in the animal, vegetable and even mineral kingdoms. To understand it, love is more necessary than ever.(7)

The Law of Love is in reality but the law of the system in demonstration on all the planes. Love was the impelling motive for manifestation, and love it is that keeps all in ordered sequence; love bears all on the path of return to the Father’s bosom, and love eventually perfects all that is. It is love that builds the forms that cradle temporarily the inner hidden life, and love is the cause of the disruption of those forms, and their utter shattering, so that the life may further progress. Love manifests on each plane as the urge that drives the evolving Monad onwards to its goal, and love is the key to the deva kingdom, and the reason of the blending of the two kingdoms eventually into the divine Hermaphrodite. (…) Love forms the sheath and inspires the life; love causes the logoic vibration to surge forward, carrying all on its way, and bringing all to perfected manifestation… Ordered Activity is the foundation of this system of ordered Love, and leads to system three, wherein ordered Activity, with ordered Love for its impulse, results in ordered loving Power.(8)

In this supreme philosophy of Love, where polarities merge, where Love suffuses every fibre of space with itself, and where the entire cosmos, immersed in the majestic river of evolution, participates in its own creation, the eternal words of the Teaching can resound, in accordance with the luminous and magnetic energy of the Full Moon:

Love can create universes. Love and Wisdom are equal.

5. “There will be three such major Festivals each year, concentrated in three consecutive months, and leading therefore to a prolonged spiritual effort which will affect the remainder of the year. These will be: – The Festival of Easter. This is the festival of the risen, living Christ, the Teacher of all men and the Head of the Spiritual Hierarchy. He is the Expression of the Love of God. On this day the Spiritual Hierarchy which He guides and directs will be recognised, and the nature of God’s love will be emphasised. This festival is determined always by the date of the first Full Moon of spring, and is the great Western and Christian festival. The Festival of Wesak. This is the festival of the Buddha, the spiritual Intermediary between the highest spiritual centre, Shamballa, and the Hierarchy. The Buddha is the Expression of the Wisdom of God, the Embodiment of Light, and the Indicator of the divine Purpose. This will be fixed annually in relation to the Full Moon of May, as is at present the case. It is the great Eastern festival. The Festival of Goodwill. This will be the festival of the spirit of humanity – aspiring towards God, seeking conformity with the Will of God and dedicated to the expression of right human relation. This will be fixed annually in relation to the Full Moon of June. It will be a day whereon the spiritual and divine nature of mankind will be recognised. On this festival, for two thousand years, the Christ has represented humanity and has stood before the Hierarchy and in the sight of Shamballa as the God-Man, the Leader of His people and ‘the Eldest in a great family of brothers’ (Romans VIII:29). Each year at that time He has preached the last sermon of the Buddha before the assembled Hierarchy. This will therefore be a festival of deep invocation and appeal, of a basic aspiration towards fellowship, of human and spiritual unity, and will represent the effect in the human consciousness of the work of the Buddha and of the Christ.” For more details see the TPS document.
